What is DTF printing?

DTF (Direct to Film) printing is an affordable and durable way of transferring full colour prints onto garments.

The process uses a unique PET film, water-based inks and an adhesive powder to create sharp prints. The artwork is then transferred onto your chosen material with precise heat application from a press machine – creating timeless pieces that are sure to impress.

This printing technique works well with a variety of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, leather, softshells and performance materials – perfect for workwear like overalls or high visibility apparel, as the ink has a very soft hand feel that won’t crack over time like conventional screen printing methods.

With no set up costs required upfront this is a cost-effective alternative for brands and businesses.

Should I use DTF printing or screen printing?

At first glance, Screen Print Transfers and Direct-to-Garment printing may appear similar. Both imprints use a hot melt adhesive to allow for long lasting durability on fabrics like Cotton, Polyester or even blended materials. However, there are distinct differences between the methods which will impact decision making based on quantity of prints needed.

For basic 1- and 2-color designs, screen print transfers are the way to go – but for vibrant full colour prints, whether you choose DTF or Screen Print Transfers can be driven by quantity. Full colour DTF is great for one-of-a kind personalisation or small quantities while Screen Prints generally have lower cost per unit when ordering a higher quantity of pieces – making screen printing more ideal for larger projects.
