Screen printing at Dandis

Since 1984 we at Dandis have learned to perfect the craft of screen printing. In addition to our near 30-years experience, we have kept up to date with the current and future techniques needed to be on top of the garment decoration game.

Our equipment

We run a 4-colour manual carousel for small print runs of 20 items or less. For the larger runs we have two automatic machines, on which we can produce screen prints of up to 10 colours per design front and back and/or up to 8 colours on a sleeve.

Inks

We use the very best in sericol and magna inks to ensure your designs last a long time on the garments we print. We have a list of preferred garment brands that we know print very well and we will happily guide you on garments within the quoting process.

When it comes to screen printing on leathers and polyester garments such as sportswear, dri-fit clothing and neo print fabric we use low-bake inks.

We use the most up-to-date pantone matching software so we can guarantee your brand colour matches across all items.

Inks types we can work with include:

  • Fluorescent inks
  • Glow in the dark inks
  • Metallic inks
  • Puff style inks
  • And many more.

This list is by no means exhaustive – the possibilities are huge, so if you have an idea please get in touch with our team today!

Printing styles

CMYK (Process printing) - for white or light grey shirts only

This type of print uses 4 coloured inks – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. It’s a very cost effective way of running complex tonal artwork onto a shirt without having to make up 10 screens to print the job. The artwork for these types of full colour or greyscale photo prints needs to be a minimum of 300dpi. In some instances it’s possible to run a print from a lower resolution design but we prefer to start with the smoothest artwork where possible to ensure the absolute best result.

Simulated process

For this style of print we will professionally separate your image layers to work on a black or dark coloured shirt. In the separation process we make a toned base along with halftoned colour layers on top to accurately reproduce your artwork onto a shirt.
Note: A 10-colour print includes the essential base layer and high white which means only 8 additional colours can be used. It is possible however to use some of the colours in the design to make other colours, for example, yellows and reds to make oranges and browns or yellows and greens to make blues etc. We will talk you through this at the time of quoting.

Photo or greyscale prints

For photo or greyscale screen printing we will colour separate your design which will allow it to be printed onto any colour shirt. We use a toned base and pantone greys, along with a high white and black screen depending on the level of detail required.

Discharge printing

This is a bleach style water-based ink which burns your design into the fabric. The resulting print feels very soft. Often with this style of printing the print will outlast the shirt! To achieve the best results with this style of ink it’s essential to print onto a 100% cotton t-shirt or sweatshirt – we will advise at the time of quoting.

Our screen printers

The methods of printing mentioned above are very technical and take a lot of skill to produce correctly.

We’re extremely proud that our head printer has been screen printing for 25 years in the textiles field. Under Dandis he has produced amazing work for the likes of the V&A museum, Tate Modern gallery and many other art galleries across the world, as well as a huge number of music artists including the late great David Bowie, Kyle Minogue and UK pioneer Goldie MBE.

What is screen printing?

Screen printing is a method used to transfer a design onto a flat surface. Ink, a mesh screen and a squeegee (either hand-held or machine) is needed for the process. Humans have long been screen printing on paper but after the invention of plastisol ink in the 1950s the use of the technique diversified. Now designs can be applied to paper, fabrics and even woods, metals and plastics using the screen-printing method. Since the 1950s screen printing has developed into the best method to decorate garments and other textiles

What is the screen printing process?

Screen printing requires a stencil. Each colour within the stencil or design is exposed on to individual screens. The screens are then manually set on the machine and each colour is printed in the optimum sequence in order to create the most vibrant result. Once printed, the garments are run through our dryer where the ink is cured. Once the screens have been made they can be used over and over again. We keep all our customer screens for approximately 1 year with the option to extend at the customer’s request.

Why choose screen printing for your garments?

When working with medium to large volume print runs, screen printing is a very cost effective way of customising your items without compromising on quality. In addition to the affordability of screen printing, no other method rivals screen printing when it comes to the vibrancy and intricacy of a design transfer. Whether you’re looking for branded caps, t-shirt printing or a unique item, screen printing is the best option available.

Why choose Dandis for your screen printing?

We view screen printing as an art form. This means we achieve high-quality results that are printed with passion.

Things to consider when it comes to screen printing?

There is a small, one-off charge per design. This is to cover the cost of screen preparations. We keep all screens, so if you want to re-run the job six months later there is no extra charge. When designing your logos bear in mind there are initial setup costs per colour which will increase the final cost of your garments. On occasion, especially if it is a small print run, the colour setup costs can cost more than the garment printing itself. We will advise in the early stages on the quoting process the best way to make this work financially and suggest alternative options or workarounds.
